A Vision Where No Person Is Needlessly Blind

Born in remote Olangchung Gola in northeastern Nepal, Dr. Sanduk Ruit witnessed firsthand how preventable diseases devastate impoverished communities. Driven by the loss of his sister to tuberculosis, he committed his career to health equity.

Through the invention of a rapid sutureless small-incision cataract surgery (SICS) technique and founding the Fred Hollows IOL Laboratory in Kathmandu, Dr. Ruit slashed intraocular lens costs by over 95%—empowering surgeons worldwide to cure cataract blindness swiftly and affordably.

The "God of Sight" Narrative

"In high mountain villages and remote valleys where blindness was once accepted as an inescapable destiny of aging, Dr. Ruit's surgical camps operate with surgical precision, returning sight to hundreds within a single weekend."
